Booklist Review

When Olympics organizers decided not to include soccer at the 1932 games, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) decided to stage its own championship every four years. This concise overview of the World Cup’s history begins with its conception and gives a summary of each World Cup tournament since. Summaries not only describe star players, key matches, and ultimate winners but the global growth of the sport, especially in Africa and Asia, and how global events (most notably, WWII) have affected tournaments. Archival photos, sidebars, charts, and QR code links to videos offer plenty of visuals to this high-interest topic, and readers will find the extensive glossary useful. This Road to the World’s Most Popular Cup series (5 titles) entry is a keeper.
