Booklist Review
Books in the Adventurous Outdoor Sports series offer eight short chapters, each introducing a single sport or two related ones. A typical entry includes facts about the sport’s origins, its growth, and its popularity today as a competitive or recreational activity. Appearing in each four-page chapter, textbook-like features such as “Text-Dependent Questions” and suggested “Research Projects” may discourage browsers; however, the relatively brief coverage of each sport actually makes these volumes best suited for recreational reading. The series’ page design evenly balances text with visual elements, mainly color photos, and its worldwide scope sometimes features outstanding athletes, past and present. Air Sports introduces topics such as ballooning, skydiving, microlight aviation, and helicopter competitions. Mountain Sports includes bouldering, canyoneering, ice climbing, mountaineering, and skyrunning. In Snow Sports, readers can learn about cross-country skiing, ski jumping, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and Yukigassen, a snowball fight competition. Water Sports looks at snorkeling, scuba diving, white-water rafting, speedboat racing, and windsurfing. Many of the sports represented in these books are available to young people only as spectators, due to factors such as expense, age restrictions, and the specialized locales and equipment needed. Still, sports enthusiasts will find a variety of options here.SLJ Review
With in-depth descriptions, text-dependent questions, and extension research topics, readers are introduced to a wide variety of alternative sports. Each book begins with what may be familiar, such as rock climbing in Mountain Sports, and escalates quickly to things like canyoneering. While some of the content in titles such as Snow Sports might be mostly familiar (with the exception of the Japanese snowball fight competition, Yukigassen), others including Air Sports have many activities people may have never heard of. QR codes link readers to supplementary content to deepen understanding through visual learning. VERDICT If alternative sports are underrepresented in your middle and high school nonfiction section, this is a solid supplemental choice.by Andrew Luke
