•This STEM in Current Events series entry examines the implementation of STEM in medicine and health care—for example, the scientific research conducted into the cancer-resisting genes of elephants that might help us understand cancer in humans, or the discovery of a way to alter the genes in adult stem cells. Technological breakthroughs examined here include the monitoring of tumor shrinkage through small devices inserted into a person’s body, scanners that detect beginning rheumatoid arthritis, and a device that can diagnose sickle cell disease and track its progress using a smartphone. •Included are color photos, sidebars, QR codes to videos with supplemental information, an index, a further reading list, and Internet resources. Key icons encourage readers to build knowledge, gain awareness, explore possibilities, and expand their viewpoints through the content. •This brief but informative text will be useful as a supplement for research projects. -BooklistSLJ Review
A focus on recent STEM developments in 10 fields ranging from agriculture to war. “Text-Dependent Questions” and “Research Project” sections help learners to re-engage with the text and topic—many even promote group work. There are a number of exciting and intriguing examples of STEM in real-life throughout these volumes. A number of different uses of cell phones, 3-D printers, and drones appear, while concepts like pay-per-laugh technology, robot bees, and Elon Musk’s Hyperloop are unique. One point to note is that, despite the series title, examples are generally not pulled from newspaper headlines but are rather ongoing developments in each field. VERDICT A great fit for classroom or school libraries and a strong consideration for public libraries interested in the integration of STEM into everyday life.by Michael Centore
